Bill Bate - Zephyros

Bill Bate - Zephyros - 'These paintings have evolved using the images of friends on a beach in South Africa. The sun was very strong, as was the wind, and we were told to take great care to use high factor sun cream and plenty of it. The images are reinforced by my memories of that trip and the feel of the heat and the dry hot wind. I wanted to try and capture the atmosphere created by the light and of the elements heat, water and wind, from various view points. I am inspired by light and the human figure so wanted to portray the striking contrast of warm bright light on the body surrounded by the cooler colours of the sky and sea. The shadows produced by strong light enable you to produce dramatic figures that enhance the image and the painting. Left unformed and unresolved in areas, to hint at movement and to excite the eye plus using an impressionistic approach to capture and exaggerate the effects of reflected light, as well as highlights and shade, upon the body. The titles for the pieces relate to the names of hot winds, they have a good feel to them and reflect perfectly the elements that combine to form this body of work.'
